Why are people making fun of Apple’s Mac Pro monitor stand?
The Apple Pro Display XDR is a 32-inch Retina 6K reference XDR display for professionals that competes with (and actually surpasses the performance of) reference HDR displays that often cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Its appearance in photos is somewhat deceiving. It is much heavier and bulkier than a typical consumer display, and therefore requires a precision stand or mount that is much more durable and capable than a consumer stand or mount.
These displays will be used in professional settings where the heavy 32-inch reference display must outperform much more expensive displays. And unlike many of them, with the Apple stand it can be easily moved around on a regular basis while being supported by a very sturdy stand or mount.
Keep in mind many comparable reference HDR displays have simple fixed stands that don’t even allow you to adjust the viewing angle at all:
Ask any video/graphics professional with years of experience in their field and they will tell you it’s not uncommon at all for displays of this caliber to be sold without stands or with extremely minimal fixed stands that are not adjustable at all. Further, the professionals who buy them often already have their own stands or mounts they want to use with them.
Of course adjustable stands that allow for easy movement yet sturdy support are desirable and will cost extra. And those professionals have absolutely no problem paying more for those more capable stands when they need them. For them, the increase in productivity they will gain from using the product to accomplish their jobs will more than pay for the display and stand easily in no time. That additional cost simply is not as important to them as it is to the average consumer.
Apple’s stand allows users of this heavy, bulky display to make adjustments to height, tilt, and rotation with minimal effort. I’ve read reviews from people who have handled the stand, where they said the display floats and is easily moved to another position with a finger.
That’s not an insignificant accomplishment for such a display and stand.
And the display attaches to the stand magnetically so they can remove it from the stand without any tools, which is a huge bonus as any professional in the field will tell you.
The cheaper VESA mount also attaches magnetically.
It’s simply not comparable to any cheap consumer display stand.
The people making fun of the stand aren’t professionals working in the fields who will purchase the Apple Pro Display XDR. They aren’t actually comparing this stand to equivalent stands. They don’t get that this isn’t a typical consumer display or stand. They are consumers, and they clearly don’t understand the product or target market.
